The present version has developed from the Victress Stakes, a Listed race established in 1995. It was renamed the Princess Elizabeth Stakes in 2001, and it was promoted to Group 3 level in 2004. The race is now held on the second day of Epsom's two-day Derby Festival meeting, the same day as the Epsom Derby .
The event is named after The Oaks, an estate located to the east of Epsom which was leased to the 12th Earl of Derby in the 18th century. He and his guests devised the race during a party at the estate in 1778. It was first run (as the Oakes Stakes [1]) in 1779, one year before the introduction of the Derby Stakes.
