S88, shorthand for ANSI/ISA88, is a standard addressing batch process control. It is a design philosophy for describing equipment and procedures. It is not a standard for software and is equally applicable to manual processes. It was approved by the ISA in 1995 and updated in 2010. Its original version was adopted by the IEC in 1997 as IEC 61512-1.
The ISA-88 Committee started work in the 1980s and has developed a series of standards and technical reports with the intent of providing a broadly accepted set of concepts, models and definitions for the batch control industry. ISA 88 Part 1, Batch Control Models and Terminology, introduces the concepts of a hierarchical model, a state model ...
Another significant ISA standard family is the batch processing standards of ANSI/ISA-88.00.01 Models and Terminology, ANSI/ISA-88.00.02 Data Structures and Guidelines for Languages, and ANSI/ISA-88.00.03 General and Site Recipe Models and Representation, which are products of the ISA-88 Batch Control committee.
A quality control system (QCS) refers to a system used to measure and control the quality of moving sheet processes on-line as in the paper produced by a paper machine. . Generally, a control system is concerned with measurement and control of one or multiple properties in time in a single dimen
Large batch sizes result in long run times, leaving other jobs waiting and increasing lead times Making large product quantities to stock leads to high inventory, often prone to inventory obsolescence – when stored products have to be discarded because of market or engineering changes
Batch process control (see ANSI/ISA-88) is employed in non-continuous batch processes, such as many pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and foods. Simulation-based optimization incorporates dynamic or steady-state computer-based process simulation models to determine more optimal operating targets in real-time, i.e. on a periodic basis, ranging from ...

In ISA-88 terms "as built" is the same as the batch record, in ISA-95 terms "as built" is the same as a "segment response" in "production performance". [ 3 ] The details in an MBOM are good enough to allow it to be used in a manufacturing operations management (MOM) System or manufacturing execution system (MES).
