O'Neil's dominated the Akron and Canton retail markets. Founded in 1877, the store grew to several locations in northeastern Ohio. In 1912, it was owned by May Department Stores, and in 1989 May merged it with its Cleveland division to form May Company Ohio, which was subsequently merged into its Pittsburgh division, Kaufmann's, in 1993.
In 1989, May Company Cleveland, and O'Neil's, based in Akron, were merged to form May Company Ohio, [8] as the May Department Stores began consolidating its regional department store divisions. On January 31, 1993, May Company Ohio was merged into Kaufmann's of Pittsburgh, [1] and its Downtown Cleveland store was closed.
The eight remaining O’Neil’s stores in Northeast Ohio would rebrand as the May Co., bringing an end to O’Neil’s after 111 years in Akron.

Rolling Acres Mall was developed by Forest City Enterprises and Akron, Ohio-based developer Richard B. Buchholzer (February 19, 1916 - February 6, 2006). [1] The developers chose the 260-acre (110 ha) site, along Romig Road on Akron's southwestern side, between 1964 and 1966 after conducting studies which revealed that several major department stores had expressed interest in that area.
