Camuto was born in New York City. He graduated from the University of Michigan Residential College in Ann Arbor in 1979 and received a master's degree in Journalism from the Columbia University School of Journalism in 1984. His father is footwear designer Vince Camuto. He has lived in France with his wife, Gilda, since 2001. The couple has one son.
