Sangramsinh was born on 6 August 1941 as the eighth child of Pratap Singh Rao Gaekwad, the last ruling Maharaja of Baroda, and his first wife Shantadevi.He has two brothers, Fatehsinghrao Gaekwad and Ranjitsinh Gaekwad, and five sisters.

Sawai Pratap Singh was born as a younger son of Sawai Madho Singh I on 2 December 1764 . Pratap Singh became the Maharaja at the age of 14 after the death of his elder full brother Sawai Prithvi Singh II. He ruled from the year 1778 to 1803. His 25-year rule witnessed many spectacular achievements and strategic failures.
He died in 1594. Later under the rule of Maharana Amar Singh I (son of maharana pratap) Shakti Singhji ruled from Bhainsrorgarh, later on Shakti Singh's 11 out of 17 sons were martyred fighting against Mughal invaders for their motherland Mewar.
