For decades, California had enjoyed full funding for its schools and unique educational programs. Then in 1978, California voters approved Proposition 13 in an attempt to cut property taxes. The state's public school system and its employees would never be the same. By 1995, California plummeted from fifth in the country to 40th in school spending.
After all construction was completed in 1956, the Lansing School District had spent $2,053,494 ($23 million in 2023 dollars). Modular "H" column cross-section. Because of a modular system of construction, the school was constructed rather efficiently. One technique was actually created by the Warren S. Holmes Company.
In the 1975–76 school year, the Lansing School District acquired and renovated the 4,200-seat field house at the adjacent Boys' Training School, then being closed by the State of Michigan. The field house was renamed in 1982 after longtime LEHS (Lansing Eastern High School) teacher and wrestling coach Don Johnson.
