Gauteng is divided into three metropolitan municipalities and two district municipalities. The district municipalities are in turn divided into a total of seven local municipalities. These municipalities are: City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality; City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality; Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality

The City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality was established on 5 December 2000, [4] comprising 13 former city and town councils and managed under an executive mayoral system. The Metsweding District Municipality was incorporated into the municipality [5] with effect from 18 May 2011 (the date of the 2011 municipal elections).
