I went to Amazon directly and bought something for myself. It still showed up in my affiliate sales (within 24 hours) so you're cookied somehow... not quite sure how it works. BUT... I wasn't paid commission on them. On a complete side note there is a link checker in Amazon so you can check your affiliate ID and the link is in good working order.
