MUT is the successor of Murang’a University College and Murang'a College of Technology. The university currently operates under the provision of the Universities Act 2012 CAP 210 B of the laws of Kenya. The university is located 1.5 km from Murang'a town, 85 km North East of Nairobi, 70 km South East of Nyeri and 50 km South West of Embu.
In 2010, the High Court declared both Murang'a North and Murang'a South, among other districts created after 1992 unlawful. [6] After the promulgation of the 2010 constitution of Kenya, the Murang'a District boundaries as of 1992, were recalled to create Murang'a County, which was formally established in March 2013.

Kang'ata was born in 1980 in Murang'a town[Muranga County]. He attended Murang'a Township Primary School (now Vidhu Ramji Primary School) between 1986 and 1993. He was admitted to Thika High School in 1994, where in 1997 he qualified for admission to the University of Nairobi for a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree. He was among the top students.
The annual prize money for the top three students is N12.5m worth of university scholarships. All students who make it to the TV quiz competition stage would get certificates of participation.
