Vulcan – a diesel-mechanical 0-6-0 shunter built at the Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows, in 1936. It had a Vulcan-Frichs 6-cylinder 275 hp (205 kW) diesel engine. After loan to the LMS, it was used by the War Department, which numbered it 75 (later 70075).

RMS Locotec was founded in April 1992, initially operating second-hand 0-4-0 and Class 08 0-6-0 shunter locomotives. During 2008, it was purchased by British American Railway Services . Throughout much of the 2010s, RMS Locotec leased six Class 31 and six Class 56 locomotives to DCRail .

In 1933, the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) announced that it was to hold an extensive trial of heavy oil locomotives for shunting duties, and among the contenders was a Drewry shunter built by the English Electric company. This was a 26-ton 0-4-0 and had an Allen 8RS18 176 hp, eight-cylinder diesel engine.
