As for length, the longest extant bony fish on earth is the giant oarfish (Regalecus glesne). Slender and compressed, it averages over 6 m (20 ft) long at maturity. A specimen caught in 1885 of 7.6 m (25 ft) in length weighed 275 kg (606 lb). The longest known example, which was hit by a steamship, was measured as 13.7 m (45 ft) long. [1]
More than 99 percent of all species, amounting to over five billion species, [7] that ever lived on Earth are estimated to be extinct. [8] [9] Estimates on the number of Earth's current species range from 10 million to 14 million, [10] of which about 1.2 million have been documented and over 86 percent have not yet been described. [11]
A form of flowering plant that far exceeds Pando as the largest organism on Earth in area and potentially also mass, is the giant marine plant, Posidonia australis, living in Shark Bay, Australia. Its length is about 180 km (112 mi) and it covers an area of 200 km 2 (77 sq mi). [8] [9] It is also among the oldest known clonal plants.
The largest species in the family is Krøyer's deep sea angler fish (C. holboelli), with a standard length of no less than 85.5 cm (33.7 in), the free-swimming males have a standard length no greater than 0.2 cm (0.079 in) and the parasitic males can grow up to 14 cm (5.5 in). [7]
More than 5,600 fish species inhabit Neotropical freshwaters alone, such that Neotropical fishes represent about 10% of all vertebrate species on the Earth. Exceptionally rich sites in the Amazon basin , such as Cantão State Park , can contain more freshwater fish species than occur in all of Europe.
Largest specimen of Leedsichthys compared to other Pachycormid fish Leedsichthys is the largest known member of the Osteichthyes or bony fishes. [ 20 ] The largest extant non-tetrapodomorph bony fish is the ocean sunfish , Mola mola , being with a weight of up to two tonnes an order of magnitude smaller than Leedsichthys .
Comparison of multiple size estimates for D. terrelli. Dunkleosteus was covered in dermal bone forming armor plates across its skull and front half of its trunk. This armor is often described as being over 2–3 inches (5.1–7.6 cm) thick, [26] [14] but this is only across the thickened nuchal plate at the back of the skull. [14]
Genetic testing was performed on Methuselah in 2023 to estimate her age by measuring DNA methylation from a sample of her fins. [10] The study estimated her to be between 92 and 101 years old at the time, far upwards of her previously estimated age of 84. [5] By comparison, the aquarium's two other lungfish were found to be 54 and 50 years old ...
