When the theatre opened on 12 January 1982, [1] it was the first purpose-built theatre in 'rural Ireland'. [ 3 ] [ a ] The then president of Ireland, Patrick Hillery , attended the opening. [ 4 ] It was named after W. B. Yeats play At the Hawk's Well , [ 2 ] and was a result of an initiative of the Arts Council and Bord Fáilte .
Sligo Jazz Project was formed in 2005 by a group of local musicians: Eddie Lee, Jim Meehan, Eddie McFarlane, and Felip Carbonell. Their vision was to bring world-class musicians to Sligo to teach and perform, with musical events that were non-elitist and affordable to everyone. Its events take place at Sligo's Hawk’s Well Theater. [2]
The company is a venue-based theatre ensemble, and performs primarily in The Factory Performance Space in Sligo, although it also tours throughout Ireland. The Factory Performance Space was originally a warehouse dating to the 1800s, but it was converted to a performance and training center during the 1990s.
