The Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 92, was composed by Camille Saint-Saëns in 1892. It was premiered on 7 December 1892 at the Salle Érard in Paris, performed by Isidor Philipp , Henri Berthelier and Jules Loeb [ fr ] .
The piano builds in a triplet pattern to introduce the D minor theme (now in Bb major) in an augmentation in a triumphant tutti. At the climax the piano comes in with a contrapuntal solo. After a minute of the fugato, the orchestra returns, playing the melody in the high winds.
The bassoons take up the wandering piano-theme, while the piano itself goes over into a pp semiquaver accompaniment. The music eventually winds down, with "a despondent-sounding version of the lullaby theme on bassoon abruptly cut off by a sharply articulated and very final sounding cadence from the orchestra".
