For 1987, a larger 7.3 L version of the IDI was introduced. This inline three-cylinder Turbocharged direct injection (TDI) diesel engine is the powerplant of the Volkswagen Lupo 3L and Audi A2 3L, with a low fuel consumption of only 2.99 L/100 km (94.5 mpg ‑imp; 78.7 mpg ‑US) – hence the "3L" tag.
