Kokborok is a Sino-Tibetan language of the Bodo–Garo branch. It is related to the Bodo and Dimasa languages of neighboring Assam. The Garo language is also a related language spoken in the state of Meghalaya and neighboring Bangladesh. Kókborok consists of several dialects spoken in Tripura.
Tribal Research and Cultural Institute was established under Tribal Welfare Department in the year 1970 as per the decision of the Government of India. [1] It is dedicated to conduct research on tribal issues and also evaluate the various programmes'/schemes' impact on the tribes residing in Tripura .
Instruction is mainly in English or Bengali, though Kokborok and other tribal languages are also used. The schools are affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE), the National Institute of Open School (NIOS) or the Tripura Board of Secondary Education. [3]
Tripura is divided into 8 districts and 23 sub-divisions, where Agartala is the capital and the largest city in the state. Tripura has 19 different tribal communities [13] with a majority Bengali population. Bengali, English and Kokborok are the state's official languages. [7]
The Tripura state Government had recognised Kokborok as a state language in 1979 only and since then important Govt. notifications are being published in Kokborok along with Bengali. The development of Kokborok literature of the last century can be divided into the following periods:
Tripura Board of Secondary Education was established in the year 1973 under the Tripura Act. No.12 and named after Tripura Board of Secondary Education Act, 1973 by Tripura Legislative Assembly. The board came in operation from the year 1976. [4] This Board is also providing higher education and granting to its affiliated schools.
