The medical college is situated in Byculla on the campus of Sir J. J. Hospital. The hospital has 2844 beds and caters to an annual load of 1,200,000 out-patients and 80,000 in-patients, from all parts of Maharashtra and central India. The campus is the largest of any medical colleges in Mumbai.

Initially, started in 1988, in the Vazirabad area of Nanded attached to the Guru Gobind Singhji Memorial civil hospital the hospital has grown into a much bigger hospital in an area of 115 acres campus after its shift to the vishnupuri area in the outskirts of the city offering a huge scope for expansion in future.
The institute has 100 seats for MBBS undergraduate course, increased from 80, since 2022. [2] The number of seats is the lowest in the state among government medical colleges and offers more personal attention to each aspiring doctor.
