Elgin was opened by the Aurora, Elgin and Chicago Railway (AE&C) on May 23, 1903. [1] The AE&C became bankrupt in 1919, and was split into two divisions – the Chicago Aurora and Elgin Railroad (CA&E) to handle interurban affairs, and the Aurora, Elgin and Fox River Electric Company (AE&FRE) to deal with the Fox River Valley, in 1921.
The station catered to passengers until July 3, 1957, when the CA&E abruptly shut down after years of financial losses. The Ardmore Avenue station is one of very few of what was once seventy-three railroad stations that served the CA&E. On November 21, 1980, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Villa Avenue Train Station is one of two former Chicago Aurora and Elgin Railroad (CA&E) stations in Villa Park, Illinois. The building was also used as an office by the Western United Gas and Electric Company. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, it is now the home of the Villa Park Historical Society Museum.

CA&E tickets were sold for Bellwood station at nearby Wordman's Drug Store, where they could be purchased between 7 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Mondays and 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on other days.
