Illini State Park was one of eleven state parks slated to close indefinitely on November 1, 2008, due to budget cuts by then-Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. [1]After delay, which restored funding for some of the parks, a proposal to close seven state parks and a dozen state historic sites, including Illini State Park, went ahead on November 30, 2008. [2]
State parks are owned by the state and generally administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. [3] Specifically, “State Park” refers to sites “exhibiting exceptional scenic and natural features and terrain” and that “offer a wide range of recreational opportunities for the public to enjoy”.
The park is broken into two units that encompass an area of 4,160 acres (1,683 ha) and contains over six miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. In 2010, it was renamed for former state senator Adeline Geo-Karis. Recreational activities at the park include boating, swimming, hiking, bicycling, camping, bird watching, and picnicking. [3]

Since the original acquisition in 1969, 100 acres (40 ha) have been added to the park [2] Silver Springs State Fish and Wildlife Area was one of five new state parks opened in northern Illinois from 1969–1971.
Today, Kickapoo State Park has 221 acres (89 ha) of ponds and lakes with nearly 35 miles (56 km) of hiking trails for many types of recreational activities including camping, canoeing, hunting, mountain biking, and fishing.
