Farrer Hall is the second oldest of the residential colleges of Monash University, located in the city of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is home to 200 residents, a third of which are usually first year students. The hall is divided into two sections: Commons and Lords.
At its peak enrolment in 2007, the campus was home to 2,000 on-campus students, 5,000 off-campus students and nearly 400 staff. The campus sits in the Latrobe Valley town of Churchill, 142 km east of Melbourne on 63 hectares of landscaped grounds. Until 2014 it was the only non-metropolitan campus of Monash University.
The campus covers an area of 55 ha (140 acres). A student accommodation building was completed in 2006 to stabilise the demand generated by both local and international students. [citation needed] The campus opened in 1996 as a campus of Monash University. In 2018, it became a campus of Federation University.
By point of comparison, the colleges at the Australian National University provide a mix of the above and a singular focus on the provision of accommodation and Monash University provides a college experience, but mostly without any academic support, the exception is the affiliated Mannix College.
