Henry Goddard Thomas (April 5, 1837 – January 23, 1897) was a Union Army general during the American Civil War. Early years [ edit ] A native of Portland, Maine , Thomas graduated from Amherst College in 1858 and was admitted to the bar shortly thereafter.
The future General Joshua L. Chamberlain and the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment played a key role at the Battle of Gettysburg, and the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery Regiment lost more men in a single charge during the siege of Petersburg than any Union regiment in the war.
Aaron Simon Daggett (June 14, 1837 – May 14, 1938) was a career United States Army officer. He was the last surviving brevet Union general of the American Civil War, and the last surviving general of any grade from the war, when he died exactly one month shy of his 101st birthday in 1938.
