Bear Creek is a town in Waupaca County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 838 at the 2000 census. The unincorporated communities of Bear Creek Corners and Nicholson are located in the town. The village of Bear Creek is located immediately east of the town, across the county line in Outagamie County.
Bearcreek and the surrounding communities had seven mercantiles, a bank, two hotels, two billiard halls, a brickyard, numerous saloons, and Bearcreek sported concrete sidewalks and their own water system. Allegedly, the town had no churches. The economy of Bear Creek was based on coal.
Salem Bear Creek Church, Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church (Ellerton Lutheran and German Reformed Church District) is a historic district roughly bounded by Union Road, Dayton Germantown Pike, and Bear Creek in Moraine, Ohio. The area was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
The community began as a lumber camp in 1850 when Captain Welcome Hyde, a lumberman, located on the bank of the Embarrass River and cut the first road into the area. The Milwaukee, Lake Shore, and Western Railroad (later Chicago and North Western Railway) was constructed through the area on its way to Clintonville, and began passenger and freight service through Bear Creek in 1878.
