The State Patrol was created in 1935 (as the Iowa Highway Safety Patrol), after an act creating the Patrol was passed by the legislature and signed by the Governor. Initially the patrol was composed of 50 men. [4] Later that same year, the word Safety was dropped from the name, and the unit became known simply as the Iowa Highway Patrol.
Like the Iowa State Patrol, Motor Vehicle Enforcement (MVE as they are most commonly called) was a statewide agency. Their primary mission and expertise was the enforcement of laws and regulations concerning commercial motor vehicles in the state.
All road deputies in the state also wear the same khaki and green uniforms. All counties have the same shoulder patches with the county name at the top, a 7 point gold star with "IOWA" in the middle, and "SHERIFF" at the bottom. Polk County Deputies may sometimes be seen with Silver 7-point stars on their uniforms.
