The orphanages run by Janusz Korczak and Stefania Wilczyńska were among the earliest democratic education institutes in the world. [1] They were two orphanages, located in Warsaw. One orphanage was established for Jewish children in 1911 and stopped working on 1942, when the SS took all its residents and workers to Treblinka extermination camp.
After the war broke out, Rosa managed the orphanage on her own, but she was deported to the eastern Germany in the spring of 1942 where she perished. [5] The orphanage was closed by the Nazis in July 1942. Children from the orphanage were sent to the children's home of the Jewish Women's Welfare Association at 24 Hans Thoma Street in Frankfurt.

Plaque where once stood the ruota ("the wheel"), the place to abandon children at the side of the Chiesa della Pietà, the church of an orphanage in Venice.The plaque cites on a Papal bull by Paul III dated 12 November 1548, threatens "excommunication and maledictions" for all those who – having the means to rear a child – choose to abandon him/her instead.
