The titular head of the university is the Chancellor, who is the President of Zimbabwe. The university is governed by a University Council, comprising the university's chief officers, representatives of the Senate, staff and students, nominees of the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education and representatives form various sectors of commerce and civil society.
It offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in social work. It is a department of the Midlands State University, Zimbabwe Midlands State University. [1] The college was founded in 1963, although some say 1964. [2]
Professor Victor Ngonidzashe Muzvidziwa is the current Vice Chancellor of Midlands State University in Zimbabwe. [1] [2] He is an anthropologist trained at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. His other qualifications, BA and MA, are from the University of Zimbabwe.
On 19 May 1991, Professor P.M. Makhurane was appointed as the inaugural Vice-Chancellor of the University and soon after that Mr Lameck Sithole and Mr Michael Kariwo were appointed as the first Bursar and first Registrar respectively. By 1 October 1991, there were 270 students, 28 academic staff, 41 administrators, and 11 support staff.
The institution was established in 1984 and was known as Umtali Technical College when it was formed. At its inception, the college operated as a satellite affiliate for Harare Polytechnic formerly Salisbury Technical College operating with just two divisions of Commerce and Engineering, right now the institution has six divisions with student enrolment of about 200 a year.
Established in 1999, [2] ZOU is the only distance education university in the country that offers a unique opportunity for students to earn as they learn. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] Student enrollment at ZOU has been growing steadily from the time of its formation and in terms of enrollment it is the largest university in Zimbabwe. [ 2 ]
