The origins of University Health Lakewood Medical Center began in 1851 with the purchase of 160 acres in eastern Jackson County, Missouri to create a "poor farm" by the Jackson County courts to "care for poor persons". In 1906, a $250,000 bond issue was passed to build a hospital on the poor farm site.
The hospital later moved to its current location on Country Club Plaza near Mill Creek Parkway and Wornall Road. The new St. Luke's hospital, on a 4-acre tract of ground extending from the west side of J.C. Nichols parkway at Forty-fourth street to Wornall road on the west, opened March 1, 1923.

Saint Luke's Health System is an Episcopal Church non-profit hospital network [1] in the bi-state Kansas City metro area, located in northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri. With over 12,000 local employees, it is the third largest private employer in the Kansas City metro.

In 1996, the hospital moved to Overland Park, with the Stowers Institute acquiring the hospital's former site. The hospital was acquired by HCA Healthcare in 2003 as part of their purchase of Health Midwest. [3] [4]
