So my surgeon has me on pepcid (generic name famotidine 20mg) 2x a day for atleast 3 months after surgery, but she said you're better if you keep taking it up to a year. I just had my insurance run out so today I went to go get a new prescription and I was going to pay cash, I ask how much it was and it was around $15, for only a 15 day supply.
my sugury is tuesday and i know we have to take pepcid ac or prilosec for one month after surgury. I went to buy pepcid ac chewables at Walgreens and was told by the pharmacist that they have been discontnued. I cannot take prilosec. they had a walgreens chewable brand but the only thing it does have 800 mg of calcium cabonate in it.
Pepcid AC has been recalled....any other options??? I have to take it for another 6 months.....
My instructions from the hospital told me to start taking Pepcid. It didn't say anything about extra doses, doubling up, anything. I see most people take Prilosec. So I'm just curious--what do you take and how much? Is the only reason to take it for discomfort or does it serve another purpose? I haven't been taking it.
Here is my experience. After my surgery, my surgeon told me it was okay to keep taking my baby aspirin once a day.
One important thing to note is that the mechanisms of action with Protonix and Pepcid are entirely different. Protonix is a proton pump inhibitor whereas Pepcid is an H2 blocker. If you're going to do an OTC med, you can certainly try the Pepcid (or Zantac...it's been shown to heal ulcers overnight when given intravenously.

It was partly my bad, I was so worried about my liquid & protein intake I totally spaced & forgot to take my pepcid 2 times a day for the first week. I was down for the count yesterday, but feel great today. My surgeon increased my pepcid & also has me taking Mylanta. Moral of the story DO NOT forget to take your acid reducer!!!! :) lesson learned.
They put me on prednisone for the 6 day series. On the last day I started experiencing stomach problems. My pouch was a little irritable. So we went on vacation the next day and I was careful about what I ate, but not the normal at home menu so I thought maybe it was because of the different food. It got worse so I started taking Pepcid.
There is no way to know that I won't get an ulcer from the NSAIDs down the line, but I could have gotten one with out the surgery too. I will have to take a PPI in addition to the pepcid I am now taking, but it is a small price to pay. I lost over 30 lbs pre op, and hope to lose another 70, then I can have my first knee replacement.
