The "new Annals" are taken from the Philadelphia Times-which ran a series called Annals of War:Chapters of Unwritten History' form 1877 thru 1889, also Scribner's, Atlantic Monthly, Harper'sNew Monthly, and even from Century Mag, after the 4 vol. "Battles and Leaders" was published.
I just got a copy of the 4-volume set of Battles and Leaders of the Civil War last night- for free, they were a giveaway from a friend. Anyway, I know about these books; that they are reprinted articles from the old Century magazine from the 1880s. I know the articles were written by the veterans.
No Civil War general ever studied The Art of War by Sun Tzu or Sun Bin's Art of War by Sun Bin. Neither of these ancient Chinese military treatises had been translated in to English or even French. This does not mean that the tactical advice given by Sun Tzu did not apply to the Civil War.

My battle books are divided into theaters and arranged chronologically. Then those that cover the entire war: Nevins, Catton, McPherson, Foote, "Battles & Leaders," etc. Biographies have their own section arranged alphabetically by subject. Then there are the political/social preliminaries and aftermath commentaries -- the "why and wherefores."
