Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow formerly known as Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU), was established by the government of Uttar Pradesh on 8 May 2000 (Act No. 1248 (2)XVII-V-I-I-19-2000 Uttar Pradesh Adhiniyam Sankhya 23 of 2000).

The institute had been a constituent college of Gautam Buddh Technical University(2010–2012). Currently it is under Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University(2015–present).
Established in 1956 the course was run as Master of Commerce in Business Administration under the aegis of Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Commerce, University of Lucknow. Later on in 1976 it was named Masters in Business Administration. The admission for the post graduate programme is done through Common Admission Test (CAT).
