This write up is for the install of Wolverine oil pan heater Model 9.1 on the 2.7L 4 banger. For the folks south of the Ohio this mod isn’t necessary. For the folks who live in the Great White North this mod in conjunction with an engine block heater will get your engine up to operating temperature within a block or two at sub zero temperatures.
I tried the oil pan heater maybe they have improved but removing before driving to me was a royal pain in the butt. I like the tank type heaters that go in the lower radiator hose myself they heat and circulate the coolant.
I have one, and will probably get an oil pan heater soon. The heater in my old F-250 diesel was either 1000 or 1500 watts- it would blow luke warm air on start-up!!! Toyota really blew it on this one IMO; it should have been closer to 800 watts.
The oil pan heater (Wolverine pan heater comes to mind) I will be installing during the next oil change since the skid plates are a bit hefty (Bud Builts). The factory block heater (for the V6) makes me a bit nervous since I have heard many reports of them leaking water and my truck needs to be as reliable as possible.
The oil pan heater only draws 1.1 amps according to the packaging, the block heater might be a little more but nothing that's going to overdraw from a standard 15 amp wall outlet. I don't use a timer, I could save a little money, I don't really want to add another appliance to the line.
I went to install an oil pan heater on my new 2024 and discovered it has a black plastic insulated protective covering on the oil pan. Wondering if it's fine to put the heater pad on the metal pan and then cover it with this black plastic insulated cover. Basically want to make sure I won't be in danger of melting the insulated plastic.
Finally got a job in Alaska, now I need to install an engine heater before leaving. I'm thinking I want to do an oil pan heater and a block heater with my battery tender, for a few hours when it's cold out to make sure and get a good start. I measured the bottom of the oil pan and it was only like 2-3 inches each way of flat area.
One thing to consider, a lot of new vehicle block heaters won't kick in unless the temp is below -18c. Not sure why that number, or weather this is...
