We're an American Band was the group's first collaboration with producer-engineer Todd Rundgren. Rundgren and the band recorded the album at Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida on June 13–15, 1973. Rundgren would go on to produce the band's next album, Shinin' On (1974), before the band switched to Jimmy Ienner.
She is mentioned in Grand Funk Railroad's song "We're an American Band" ("Last night in Little Rock, put me in a haze / Sweet, sweet Connie, doin' her act / She had the whole show and that's a natural fact.") Early pressings of the album (including record-club pressings) simply state the band's name as "Grand Funk" on the front cover and spine, but have the full name on the record labels. The 2003 re-mastered version of this release has a total time of 79:08, and was squeezed down to one disc.
