A note on the separate status of the Wikimedia Endowment. The Wikimedia Endowment, held from 2016 to 2023 by the Tides Foundation and now a standalone 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is not and has never been included in Wikimedia Foundation assets, even though Wikimedia Foundation fundraising staff solicit donations to the Endowment and the Wikimedia Foundation itself made donations to the Endowment.
The Foundation took $180 million in total support and revenue (a new record and up $25 million on the previous year) versus total expenses of $169 million (up $23 million). As 2022 came to a close, a Request for Comment (RfC) on English Wikipedia proposed changes to the messaging of year-end fundraising banners. The Wikimedia Foundation accepted the guidance provided by the close of the RfC, and established a co-creation page to seek volunteer input on banner messaging from community members.
