Loop 61 was designated on September 25, 1939, as a loop off US 175 in Eustace. On June 21, 1990, by district request, a 0.16-mile (0.26 km) section from US 175 to FM 316 was removed from the highway system (this section is now Wheeler Street) and the remaining 0.1 mile section from FM 316 to US 175 became an extension of FM 316.
