Ethiopia has significant natural resources that could make an important contribution to future developments in science and technology. For example, geothermal energy could soon be an important source of electricity nationally, [ 9 ] [ 10 ] complementing the hydropower potential of the country. [ 11 ]
The power generated in Ethiopia is less expensive than that generated in Kenya, and electricity imports over the interconnector were expected to lower power prices in Kenya and promote industrial growth in the country. [2] The project was budgeted at KSh 126 billion (approximately US$1.26 billion).

On 12 November 2018, all assigned project canceled due to fail to complete, and government arrested Kinfe Dagnew, CEO of METEC, after a trial to escape through Sudan, where he was captured by Defence force. Kinfe Dagnew arrived in helicopter to Addis Ababa. [6] Many METEC officials were prosecuted for corruption on the project. [7]
