The school was built primarily to serve the needs of families in the city center. Initially two grades shared each classroom, and on occasion the school would handle overflow from the high school. Due to growth in Coeur d'Alene, in 1945 the school stopped serving the fifth and sixth grades.

District students who qualify are also eligible for dual enrollment with North Idaho College and the University of Idaho.

The primary rival of Lake City High School is Coeur d'Alene High School, which is zoned for the north and east areas of the school district. Other 6A schools in north Idaho include nearby Post Falls to the west, their sub-rival in Match for the Masks, and Lewiston to the south. All four are members of the Inland Empire League (6A).
