UAB Hospital (also known as University Hospital) is a 1,207 bed tertiary hospital and academic health science center located in Birmingham, Alabama.It serves as the only ACS verified Level I Trauma Center in Alabama, [2] and is the flagship property of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and the UAB Health System, a part of the University of Alabama System.
Gardendale is located in an area that once yielded large amounts of coal. Gardendale is located at the southwestern end of one of the Appalachian ridgelines running from eastern Tennessee into northeast Alabama. Several old and closed coal mines exist in the area as well as lands that were once strip mined and then replanted for forests.
UAB is a vital economic engine of the state of Alabama with an estimated $7.15 billion annual impact. UAB is currently the state's largest employer with more than 24,000 faculty and staff and over 64,000 jobs at the university and in the health system. The Kirklin Clinic is the primary adult outpatient clinic of the medical staff of UAB Hospital, and of the faculty of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine. Kirklin Clinic also is the site for many clinical rotations in the medical school's doctoral and residency programs.
