Williams Lake is an alpine lake in Taos County, New Mexico, United States, located high in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains below Wheeler Peak in the Wheeler Peak Wilderness of Carson National Forest. The lake is accessible via the Williams Lake Trail from the trailhead in Taos Ski Valley . [ 1 ]

The area was expanded by 14,700 acres (5,900 ha) in 1980 with the passage of the New Mexico Wilderness Act. [2] In 1996, public law 104-333 [ 3 ] transferred 764 acres (309 ha) from the wilderness south of the ridge between Simpson Peak and Old Mike Peak and west of Blue Lake to the nearby Taos Pueblo .
Lea Lake is the only lake in which swimming is allowed. It has a beach and concession area that is popular in the summer. Devil's Inkwell is the smallest lake with a surface area of 0.36 acres (0.15 ha). Its name stems from the water's dark color, caused by the steep sides of the cenote and algae growth within the lake.
Ute Reservoir is the only large state-owned and operated reservoir in New Mexico. [4] Structurally the Ute Dam has the largest labyrinth weir spillway in the United States. It was a 1984 addition to the original structure, designed by the United States Bureau of Reclamation, which raised the height of the lake by 27 feet (8.2 m). [5]
