Croup (/ k r uː p / KROOP), also known as croupy cough, is a type of respiratory infection that is usually caused by a virus. [2] The infection leads to swelling inside the trachea, which interferes with normal breathing and produces the classic symptoms of "barking/brassy" cough, inspiratory stridor and a hoarse voice. [2]

In babies under one year old, dying during sleep is a leading cause of accidental death. The recommendation that babies sleep flat on their backs, in an empty crib, halved this death rate. [5]

A folk treatment is known, when the child is briefly immersed in very cold water then, without delay, intensely rubbed (with a towel or like that), dressed in comfortably warm clothes and placed in a comfortably warm room. I don't know, whether it is a sham treatment or an effective one (but, probably, a dangerous), but it should be covered anyway.
