The KTM 500 EXC is one model in the series of 4-stroke enduro off-road motorcycle made by KTM. They are essentially the 400/450 EXCs with changes to the stroke to achieve larger displacements. The 520, 525, 530 and 500 are all in fact 510.4 cc motors given different model numbers to distinguish them.
As of 2023, after 27 years, the model is still in production and was the best selling over-500cc bike in New Zealand. The bike is often in the top five sellers of any capacity bikes in New Zealand. The DR650 is also a big seller in Canada and previously in Australia.
The bike became an instant success and was produced until 1981 when it was replaced by four-valve engines. It laid the ground for the later range of XT bikes ranging from 125 cc to the current 660 cc (Yamaha XT660Z Ténéré) and contributed largely to Yamaha's image. With its six-speed transmission and stock wheels, the 950SE is capable of speeds in excess of 190 km/h (118 mph). The 950SE is claimed to be one of the most-powerful and “intense” enduro motorcycles.
The Honda XR series is a range of four-stroke off-road motorcycles that were designed in Japan but assembled all over the world. Some of the XR series came in two versions: R and L . The R version bikes were enduro machines designed for off-road competitive riding.

MX racing bikes have often been used as platforms for building enduro bikes. [1] This was partially driven by the conversion of MX from 2-stroke to 4-stroke engine designs to comply with regulatory trends, as well as the development of hybrid competition races such as Enduro-X. [1] Compared to MX bikes, enduro and dual-sport bikes traditionally had a much higher proportion of 4-stroke motors.
