This is a list of the counties of the United Kingdom. The history of local government in the United Kingdom differs between England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and the subnational divisions within these which have been called counties have varied over time and by purpose.
This template displays a labelled map of the ceremonial counties of England (or their historical equivalents), with each county name linked to a Wikipedia article or category associated with that county.
"England" means, "subject to any alteration of boundaries under Part IV of the Local Government Act 1972, the area consisting of the counties established by section 1 of that Act, Greater London and the Isles of Scilly." This definition applies from 1 April 1974. "United Kingdom" means "Great Britain and Northern Ireland."
