Bear Mountain State Park is a 5,205-acre (21.06 km 2) state park located on the west bank of the Hudson River in Rockland and Orange counties, New York. [ 2 ] [ 5 ] The park offers biking, hiking, boating, picnicking, swimming, cross-country skiing , cross-country running, sledding and ice skating.
It is crossed by several hiking trails as well, including the oldest section of the Appalachian Trail (AT). As of 2021, the AT across Bear Mountain has been improved by the New York–New Jersey Trail Conference to minimize erosion and improve accessibility and sustainability as part of a project to rebuild and realign the trail that began in 2006.

The park is composed of four separate tracts of land, two of which are contiguous, reflecting its piecemeal acquisition. The southernmost section begins just north of Peekskill, abutting the New York National Guard's Camp Smith, following the Bear Mountain Highway (US 6 and 202) around the lower slopes of Anthony's Nose.
Most of this land is part of Camp Smith, a New York National Guard reservation. [2] US 6/202 crosses the Hudson on the Bear Mountain Bridge to the western tip of the mountain, where it meets NY 9D. 9D runs northeast along the northwestern flank of the mountain to Garrison, New York, while 202/6 runs southeast, hugging the cliffs, towards Peekskill.
