Saint Xavier University was founded as a women's college by the Sisters of Mercy in 1846 at the request of Bishop William Quarter.With the City of Chicago less than 10 years old, the religious sisters, under the guidance of Mother Mary Francis Xavier Warde, R.S.M., established Saint Francis Xavier Female Academy.

The school's living graduates number over 18,000, as of 2013. Saint Xavier Bob Hallberg (February 10, 1944 – November 19, 2019) was a college basketball coach, and the head coach of the St. Xavier University Women's Basketball team from 2000-2019. Hallberg's career started at Kennedy High School, where he was the boys coach for five seasons from 1966-1971.
