The Navy's maritime wing headquarters was established in 1998, while in 2000 construction of a naval base began at Walvis Bay. [6] The first maritime wing commander was Captain Phestus Sacharia. The Navy has approximately 1200 personnel and deploys a small number of lightly armed patrol vessels.
