In 1943, the State of Oregon purchased 14,450 acres (58.5 km 2) near Sun Mountain to establish Sun Pass State Forest. Additional land was added to the forest in 1944, 1947, and 1948. In 1955, the Oregon Board of Forestry deeded 19 acres (7.7 ha) of Sun Pass land to the Oregon State Highway Division to create Jackson F. Kimball State Park.
The highway then passes over the mountains. The highway ends at an interchange with U.S. Route 97 in Klamath Falls; just west of this interchange the highway intersects and briefly overlaps Oregon Route 140. OR 140 continues east of the US 97 interchange, past the Klamath Falls airport, and eventually towards Lakeview.
The Woods Line is a trail that branches off the OC&E State Trail near Beatty outside of Klamath Falls and heads northward. The trail crosses over the Sprague River and next to the Sycan Shops. The trail meets Five Mile Creek after 10 miles (16 km) and runs along as its companion for 6 miles (10 km), crossing over it several times.
