The Asiatic Lion Reintroduction Project is an initiative of the Indian Government to provide safeguards to the Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica) [a] from extinction in the wild by means of reintroduction. The last wild population of the Asiatic lion is found in the region of Gir Forest National Park, in the state of Gujarat.
The Asiatic lion is the last surviving population of this clade. Once also found in the Middle East, it is nowadays confined in the wild to Gujarat in India. Genetically, the extinct lions from Northern Africa, formally termed as Barbary lions, fall into the same clade as the Asiatic lion. [8]
The last refuge of the Asiatic lion population is the 1,412 km 2 (545 sq mi) Gir National Park and surrounding areas in the region of Saurashtra or Kathiawar Peninsula in Gujarat State, India. The population has risen from approximately 180 lions in 1974 to about 400 in 2010. [ 211 ]

The lion population increased from 411 individuals in 2010 to 674 in 2020, and all of them live in or around Gir National Park. [9] In 1900 it was estimated that the population was as low as 100, and the Asiatic lion was declared a protected species.

Bhavnagar Amreli Forest is a reserved area for conservation of Asiatic lions.The new location is east side of Gir National Park in Amreli district of Gujarat.After inclusion of New Jesal sanctuary the area of this forest will go to 1600 km 2 which is bigger than Gir sanctuary. [1]
The state of Gujarat is the only state with 100% of Asiatic lion population in the world. [10] Information of the states Punjab, Haryana, Manipur, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Jammu and Kashmir are missing.
