The first three grades of primary school are called Algkool which can be translated as "beginning school" and can be confused with primary school. In some low density population areas Algkool is the only school available and students enter primary school in bigger towns. 1st grade: 7–8 years; 2nd grade: 8–9 years; 3rd grade: 9–10 years
A student who passes is given a school-leaving certificate by his or her school. The student is also given an academic certificate by the National Examination Council of Tanzania. This certificate indicates the student's level of performance in several subjects, with division I being the best performance and division IV being the worst.
A common practice is the year number followed by the initials of the teacher who takes the form class (e.g., a Year 7 form whose teacher is John Smith would be "7S"). Alternatively, some schools use "vertical" form classes where pupils across several year groups from the same school house are grouped together.
