In 2013 Sutton's secondary schools bucked the national trend and performed better than in 2012. 83.9% of pupils achieved five A* to C GCSE grades in subjects including Maths and English compared with 75.6% in 2012. The London Borough of Sutton and its council were created under the London Government Act 1963, with the first election held in 1964.
