Clinton Avenue School is a bilingual (American English and Spanish) school located at 293 Clinton Avenue in the Fair Haven neighborhood of New Haven, Connecticut, USA. It was built in 1911 and underwent extensive renovations beginning in 2004. The original design was similar to the nearby Truman School, both Beaux Arts style buildings. [1]

Fair Haven is located about two miles east of the New Haven Green comprising New Haven wards 14, 15, 16, and a portion of 8. [1] It is bounded on the east and south by the Quinnipiac River, on the west by the Mill River, on the northwest by Amtrak railroad tracks, and on the north by I-91 (in the vicinity of Exit 7).

Permanent school that grew out of a meeting of New Haven citizens in 1864. New Haven architect Henry Austin donated the design. Used as a school until 1874 when African-American children began attending previously all white public schools. The building was then used by African-American community organizations. [19] 24
During the 1960s, it was a popular restaurant called Hungry Charlie's and then the location of Caleb's Tavern. In 1974, Mike Spoerndle, formerly a student at the Culinary Institute of America, rented the building for a French and Italian restaurant, which opened in March 1975. He named it Toad's Place, after a childhood joke.
