Jonathan "Johnny" Kemp [2] (August 2, 1959 – April 16, 2015) was a Bahamian singer, songwriter, and record producer. He began his career as a songwriter in late 1979 and is perhaps best known for his solo work, including his single "Just Got Paid" (1988), which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song in 1989.
The song started as an instrumental track by Teddy Riley intended for Keith Sweat's 1987 debut Make It Last Forever, [3] but Sweat ultimately passed on the song. [3] Kemp then recorded a demo of the song, intending for it to be used by another singer; his scratch vocal ended up on the final release.
