[1] IHF is responsible for the organisation of handball's major international tournaments, notably the IHF World Men's Handball Championship, which commenced in 1938, and the IHF World Women's Handball Championship, which commenced in 1957.

France is the most successful team with six titles, followed by Sweden , Denmark and Romania with four titles each.
