Stockton is a city in and the county seat of San Joaquin County in the Central Valley of the U.S. state of California. [19] It is the most populous city in the county, the 11th-most populous city in California and the 60th-most populous city in the United States .
The community was named after one Mr. Stockton, a railroad official. [3] Georgia General Assembly incorporated Stockton as a town in 1876. [4] The town's municipal charter was repealed in 1995. [3] In 1944 the community was the site of the Stockton train wreck, a train derailment caused by a broken rail in which 47 people were killed. [5]

The concept for an 11,000-unit residential area emerged in 1987 as a "mixed-use" planned community. The City of Stockton annexed the location in 1988, and construction started around 1989, with the first homes built in 1990. Lyon Communities and Verner Construction were the main developers for Weston Ranch, but encountered financial difficulties.
The hospital is one of the oldest in the west, and was notable for its progressive forms of treatment. The hospital is #1016 on the Office of Historic Preservation's California Historical Landmark list, and today is home to California State University Stanislaus - Stockton Center.
